SOLD ITEM 9855 - Antique cast iron garden statue group

There are 11 images of this item.
Set of 4 antique garden statues depicting the Four Seasons. Nineteenth century. The Four Seasons is an ancient decorative motif. Each season is represented as an allegorical figure bearing traditional iconographic symbols: bouquets of flowers for spring; sheaves of wheat for summer; clusters of grapes for autumn; and bundles of firewood for winter. The Romans typically represented the seasons as voluptuous goddesses known as the Horae. Each graceful figure measures 48-49 inches high and weighs 175 to 200 lbs. Finely detailed and finished casting, probably from a New York foundry. Found in Newport, RI, in 1960.
