Antique G. E. Sommer bronze figure of Antinous, revered lover of the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Cast in Napoli after the antique, circa 1880. The scuplture measures 25 inches tall inclusive of the 10 inch diameter base, and retains its beautiful original patina. Giorgio Sommer was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1834, but settled in Italy, where he became one of the 19th century's most prolific photographers, cataloguing art and antiquities from the Vatican Museum, the National Archeological Museum at Naples, the Roman ruins at Pompeii, as well as street and architectural scenes of Naples, Florence, Rome, Capri and Sicily. Most notably, Sommer published his comprehensive album "Dintorni di Napoli" which contained over one hundred images of everyday scenes of Naples. In 1860, the National Museum in Naples became a public institution, and dispensed permits to mold and copy antiquities in its collections. Giorgio Sommer's was one of several art foundries which reproduced antique works. Sommer died in 1914.
