Early American coin silver porringer made by Samuel Vernon, Newport, RI. Bombe bowl with pierced geometric handle which is engraved “PC N H”. The inside of the bowl and back of handle are each marked with a heart surrounding “SV” with a fleur-de-lis. The handle was later engraved "A Present from His Mother 1853, Sycurgus H Holland." The silversmith Samuel Vernon (1683-1737) was born in Narragansett, the second cousin of Edward Winslow. Admitted as a freeman in 1714, he was very active in civic duties, serving as Justice of the Peace from 1728 and as an assistant in the General Assembly 1729-37. He worked for the colony’s land claims against the Narragansett Indians and neighboring Massachusetts while maintaining a prolific silver shop and other mercantile activities alongside. SIZE: 7 and 5/8ths inches with handle; bowl 4.75 inches by 2 inches. WEIGHT: 8.45 troy ounces. PROVENANCE: From a Lyme, CT, estate. CONDITION: Some very minor small dents, slightly out of round, otherwise very good.
