A fine quality burl walnut pedestal desk with inset leather top dating from the late 19th century. This fine quality walnut desk has a inverted molded breakfront top with two cross banded burl walnut panels flanking and central original leather insert. The top containing three frieze burl walnut herringbone cross banded fully oak lined drawers sitting above a pair of molded cornered pedestals each with three graduated burl walnut drawers and original brass fretted swans neck handles. This antique burl walnut desk is raised on carved ogee bracket feet and is freestanding with a veneered and polished back. Made by the famous cabinet makers Maple and Co retaining the original brass plate within the top drawer you do not get better quality than this. Having a lovely faded walnut color this fine desk has been fully restored and ready use. Knee height 24 1/2 inches - 62cm. They were well known for fine quality, craftsmanship and were specialists in copying old designs but bringing them up to date to the more modern trends. They produced many quality pieces of furniture in designs such as Hepplewhite and Chippendale. They were also very well known for their quality Arts & Crafts Furniture. Maple & Co was first established by John Maple, a shopkeeper, Surrey, who later opened a furniture shop in Tottenham Court Road but it was his son, John Maple, that turned Maples & Co into a huge success. With his skills in business, by the 1880s they were the largest furniture store in the world.
