Mid 19th century winged griffin wrought iron doorbell. This piece was made by a master blacksmith. Each wing is composed of finely wrought iron feathers that were hand forged, then cut and set with rivets. The tail of the griffin twists around so it can hold the chain that rings the bronze bell. The face, head, teeth and tail were created by hand cutting a single block of iron. The roots of this design go back to 13th - 14th century Europe. Measures 19 inches high, 13 inches wide and 12 inches deep. Excellent original condition. This piece is unsigned but is of Samuel Yellin quality. It was found in a home in New Haven, CT, where Yellin had numerous commissions.
