Maurice Villency birdseye diminutive maple chest with mirror circa 1960 to 1980. The chest measures 36.5 inches high x 35.5 inches wide at top and 20.5 inches wide at base. The mirror measures 21.5 inches wide at top x 17.75 inches wide at base and 32 inches high. Excellent original condition. This is modern at its best. Mr. Villency, convinced that modern designs could compete with traditional and early American furniture, began designing and building his own furniture in a loft on East Eighth Street in Greenwich Village over 50 years ago. Maurice Villency was a pioneer in the design of contemporary furniture whose signature served as the logo for his chain of stores in the New York metropolitan region. Among his first successes was the sectional couch, which he designed and manufactured. He introduced Scandinavian modern furniture to the US in the early 1950's, insisting on quality and workmanship. Mr Villency was born in 1901 in Glasgow, Scotland, and died in 1986 at 85 years old.
