Large heavy antique French copper pot, mid 19th century. Stamped D Co. New York French Range Co. M. This piece of classic French copper cookware is in excellent original condition. All hand dovetailed. It is very heavy gauge copper weighing 20.6 lbs. It measures 10 inches high x 14.5 inches wide x 31 inches long handle to handle. On many of the pots and pans made in 19th century France, you can find initials and numbers inscribed. The numbers were used to tell the pans apart in a busy kitchen. They were either inscribed by the manufacturer, often denoting the diameter of the pan in centimeters, or by the owners. The latter frequently had their initials placed in the pan. It is said that sometimes this was done to help tell the owner of the pans apart when they were sent to the tinsmith for re-tinning. In some pans you can see multiple sets of initials, tracing the many different households the pan has gone through.
