He emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, with his family as a child. He studied painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art and also in Paris, where he was greatly influenced by Matisse and the Fauvists. It was in Paris that he met his artist wife, Marguerite. He taught sculpture at the Art Students League in NYC from 1920 to 1960. He died in Bath, Maine in 1966.
