Louis W.(Ludvik) Durchanek wood sculpture of a pensive man, circa 1950. The sculptor was born in Vienna 1902, and came to the United States in 1927. He began painting when young, but turned to sculpture around 1950, working mostly in welded metal. He sculpted figures, most of which satirized social, political, and religious institutions. The figure measures 20 inches high, 10 inches wide and 9 inches deep. It was carved by the artist from a single piece of American chestnut. His choice of chestnut is what gives this sculpture its magnificent color and definition.
