SOLD ITEM 8288 - The Artisans Shop Biltmore NC walnut picture frame

There are 8 images of this item.
Hand carved black walnut Florentine picture frame made in the Artisans' Shop, Biltmore, North Carolina, circa 1930. It originally sold for $12.00, which was quite expensive at that time. It measures 11.5 x 13.5 inches outside and 8 x 10 inches inside. The Artisans' Shop was established by George and Cornelia Vanderbilt in Biltmore village; it was first run by Robert Valier, and later run by George Arthur. The Vanderbilts wished to employ native craftsmen of the Asheville area in the production of traditional fine woodworking. The shop produced fine handmade furniture and decorative objects in the European style, and also offered classes in furniture making and carving. Many of the furniture pieces produced by the shop were "one-of-a-kind" reproduced on request from patrons.
