African Ibo tribe maiden ceremony mask. This early vintage African mask measures 21.75 inches high by 8.5 inches wide by 11.5 inches deep. Mounted the stand, the mask is 25 inches high. In the north central region of Iboland, "maiden masks" were carved for the "The Fame Of Maidens' annual festival. Here is a description from a Sotheby's NY sale of African and Oceanic Art on 11/19/99, in which lot 130, a similar mask, had been sold with an estimate of $15,000 to $25,000: "The ideal beauty of a girl has both physical and moral dimensions. Physically she should be tall and lithe, with an upright posture and stately carriage...Ideally she will have fine facial features, a thin straight nose and a small mouth and her hair will be elaborately and delicately dressed in the preferred crested style...These ideals link too with the beauty of nature and valued...medicines...Her moral qualities will include purity, obedience, good character and generosity." (Cole and Aniakor 1982:121). Condition is excellent with the proper amount of wear showing from ceremonial use.
