Here is another interesting Civil War document. It is on the letterhead of the General Headquarters State of Connecticut, Adjutant General's Office. The Adjutant General is requesting that Samuel Hubbard, Esq., a Selectman of Middletown, provide the numbers of men enrolled for the army. The date is 7 august 1861, only seventeen days after the disastrous Union defeat at first Bull Run. It was clear by then that the war would not be over in a few days or even weeks. Lincoln had already called for 75,000 volunteers, and any more would be enlisted. By 1865 the United States Army would become the largest in the world. This document represents the first drop of what would become a torrent of military expansion. The piece has been custom framed for your enjoyment. Its overall dimensions are 12 by 15 inches. The document itself is 7 and one half inches by 9 and one half inches, and it is in excellent condition. There are no chips or tears and the handwriting is specially clear and legible. The piece has been folded as it was apparently sent through the mail. This is an excellent Civil War collector's piece.
